How to measure
Draw the floor or wall and split irregular areas into rectangles. Measure in feet, sum the square feet and exclude areas that will not be tiled. Enter the face width and length of one tile in inches, and the coverage printed on the carton.
Formula and assumptions
Boxes = ceiling(area × (1 + allowance / 100) ÷ square feet per box); tiles = ceiling(adjusted area ÷ (tile width × tile length / 144)).
Worked example
For 190 sq ft, 12 × 24 inch tile, a 16 sq ft box and 10% waste, plan for 14 boxes and about 105 pieces.
Before you buy
The box count and piece count are separate estimates. Use manufacturer coverage, account for grout joints and keep matching batch information.
Why do tile and box counts differ?
A carton may include a stated coverage that accounts for its actual piece count, and joint widths or cuts change the layout. Order complete cartons from the same batch where possible.
