How to measure
Measure the surface area in square feet and choose a compacted layer depth in inches. Ask the supplier for the aggregate’s bulk density and whether it sells by cubic yard or by US short ton.
Formula and assumptions
Cubic yards = area in sq ft × depth in inches ÷ 12 ÷ 27 × (1 + allowance / 100); US short tons = cubic yards × density.
Worked example
For 220 sq ft at 2 inches deep plus 10% allowance, plan for about 1.49 cubic yards; at 1.4 short tons per cubic yard, about 2.09 tons.
Before you buy
Bulk density varies by stone and compaction. Ask the supplier whether tons means US short tons and confirm delivery quantities.
Can I use one density for every gravel?
No. Particle size, moisture and compaction alter bulk density. Replace the example value with the supplier’s figure.
