Flooring Cost Calculator: Boxes, Waste and Material Cost

Estimate how many flooring boxes to buy and the approximate material cost using room dimensions, box coverage, waste allowance and the current price per box.

Formula

Boxes = ceiling((room area × (1 + waste %)) ÷ box coverage). Material cost = boxes × price per box.

Why use price per box?

Retail listings may show price per square foot while the product is sold only in full cartons. Enter the actual box coverage and current box price so the estimate reflects whole-package purchasing.

Worked example

A 14 × 12 ft room is 168 sq ft. With 10% waste, plan for 184.8 sq ft. If each box covers 20 sq ft, the calculator rounds up to 10 boxes. At $39.99 per box, the material estimate is $399.90.

Costs not included

The result covers the flooring material only. Underlayment, trim, transitions, adhesives, fasteners, delivery, sales tax, labor and subfloor repair are separate unless you add them to your own budget.
