Drywall Calculator: Sheets Needed for Walls and Ceilings

Estimate how many drywall sheets to buy from the total surface area, the sheet dimensions and an adjustable waste allowance. Use the exact panel size available for your project.

Project dimensions

Formula

Sheets = ceiling((surface area × (1 + waste %)) ÷ sheet area). Sheet area equals sheet width × sheet length.

How to measure drywall area

For a wall, multiply width by height. Add every wall section you plan to cover. For a ceiling, multiply room length by room width. If you already know the total square footage, enter it directly.

Worked example

A 480 sq ft project using 4 × 8 ft sheets has 32 sq ft per sheet. With a 10% allowance, the calculator plans for 528 sq ft, which rounds up to 17 sheets.
